In just 19 days, 19 hours, and 40 minutes, Barrington “B.J.” Scott etched his name in history as the fastest person to dive on all seven continents. But this feat was not just a race against time—it was a journey of determination, courage, and a deep-seated will to transform a life marked by hardship into one of inspiration.
Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Scott’s early life was anything but privileged. He grew up in the foster care system before being adopted at the age of 12. Despite the odds, he never allowed his circumstances to stifle his ambition.
After graduating high school, Scott joined the United States Marine Corps and was deployed to Afghanistan. The military molded his character and instilled in him a tough mindset. But when his service ended, he felt a void—a yearning for something deeper. He pursued a career as a professional chef, but the call of adventure proved stronger.
In his mid-20s, Scott made a life-changing decision: he sold his belongings, bought a one-way ticket to Malaysia, and began a global backpacking journey. It was during this quest that he discovered his true calling—diving.

Discovering the Underwater World
Scott’s first dive took place in the Bahamas in 2014. From that moment on, he fell in love with the ocean and the life it harbored. He trained to become a diving instructor, spending years exploring the world’s oceans, swimming alongside exotic marine species, and developing a deep understanding of underwater ecosystems.
But his mission extended beyond personal exploration. Scott wanted to share his passion with his community—especially with Black children, who are often underrepresented in marine activities. Recognizing the lack of diversity in the diving world, he aimed to change the narrative. One of his efforts includes writing a children’s book titled Trent’s Adventures: Deep Sea Discover, designed to spark curiosity about the ocean and promote marine conservation among the younger generation.

A World Record: Diving the Seven Continents
On November 13, 2024, Scott launched his quest to set a Guinness World Record as the fastest person to dive on all seven continents. The journey tested not only his physical endurance but also demanded precise logistical planning.
He began in Sydney, Australia, followed by a dive in Phuket, Thailand, representing Asia. He then crossed the seas to Alexandria, Egypt, plunging into the historic Mediterranean waters. Europe was marked off with a dive in Malta, known for its mesmerizing underwater caves.
In North America, he dove in Miami, Florida, and braved the chilly waters of Ushuaia, Argentina, for South America. The final and most challenging leg was in the icy waters off King George Island in Antarctica, where near-freezing temperatures and extreme conditions pushed him to the limit.
In under 20 days, Scott completed all seven dives—achieving a new world record. But for him, the journey was about more than records. It was a declaration that no dream is out of reach for those willing to chase it with all they’ve got.
A Mission That Goes Beyond Records
Now, with history behind him, Scott continues to advocate for greater Black representation in the marine world. He speaks at forums, shares his journey, and inspires young people to explore the depths of the ocean.
Through his life story, Scott shows that daring to dream and stepping into the unknown can transform everything. From a foster child in the Bronx to a global record-setter, his path proves that the greatest adventures often begin with the decision to go off the beaten path.
The ocean has become his second home, and through his achievements, Scott hopes to open doors for more people to experience, respect, and protect the wonders hidden beneath the waves. (Sulung Prasetyo)
