High in the Italian Alps, where wind carves the ridges and silence becomes a kind of music, a new architectural experiment is preparing to reshape the way humans meet the mountains. It’s not a cabin, nor a hut, nor a typical bivouac. It’s something closer to a crystal—an angular, faceted, transparent shelter designed by Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA), a studio known for merging cutting-edge technology with thoughtful environmental design.
This new bivouac is more than a refuge for hikers and mountaineers. It is a symbol of how architecture can coexist with fragile alpine ecosystems while still offering comfort, shelter, and awe. And soon, during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan–Cortina, the world will get its first glimpse.
Unlike the classic metal bivouacs scattered around the Alps—compact, cold, and visually striking against the natural landscape—CRA’s creation takes the opposite route. Instead of standing out, it blends in. The design process began with a detailed 3D scan of the mountain rocks, capturing every crease, curve, and texture. The team then shaped the structure to echo this natural geometry.
The result is a prefabricated shelter made of layered wood panels (CLT), lightweight metal, high-performance insulation, and a dramatic glass façade. The entire form reflects the jagged language of the Alps, almost as if the mountain itself had sprouted a geometric extension.
This digital-first workflow serves two purposes. It reduces the environmental footprint by minimizing on-site work, and it also ensures the shelter feels like an extension of the rock rather than an alien insertion. In a time when sensitive ecosystems are increasingly threatened, this philosophy matters.
A Panoramic Refuge for a New Generation of Climbers
Step inside, and the first thing you notice is the view. The vast glass wall turns the entire landscape into a moving painting—sunrises spilling gold over ridgelines, storms rolling in like curtains of mist, and stars sweeping across the night sky. The shelter’s layout is compact but surprisingly functional. Sleeping space, a cooking area, and logistics equipment are arranged with the efficiency of a well-designed expedition tent.
There is even a mid-level platform where climbers can sit, rest, and absorb the magnificent panorama. This small space could easily become the emotional heart of the entire structure—a quiet corner suspended between earth and sky.
The bivouac isn’t only beautiful, though. It’s engineered for autonomy. Solar panels generate up to 5 kW of power, supported by a battery system. A built-in atmospheric water generator extracts drinkable water from thin mountain air. Heating is made efficient through induction technology, and the insulation ensures safety in harsh winter conditions.
Even visibility is smartly engineered. Traditional shelters rely on bright paint to help rescuers locate them. CRA’s version uses sensor-activated red lights that glow automatically when fog or low-visibility conditions appear, avoiding visual pollution while ensuring safety.
Before reaching its permanent alpine home, the bivouac will debut in Milan during the 2026 Winter Olympics as a public installation. Visitors will be able to walk inside and imagine themselves in the wilderness. Once the Games conclude, the structure will be dismantled, transported, and installed in the Alps—an example of circular design in practice.
This lifecycle reflects a growing trend in architecture: building for movement, for reuse, and for minimal impact. In an age of climate disruption, mobility and reversibility are design strengths, not weaknesses.

A Philosophy Rooted in Respect for the Landscape
Carlo Ratti has been vocal about the inspiration behind the project. Instead of producing something that resembles a UFO landing pod, the team sought to revive a more poetic legacy of alpine design—one that respects the mountains rather than overwhelms them. The glinting, crystalline shape draws from the ideas of Italian architect Gio Ponti, who believed architecture should behave like a crystal in the landscape: reflective, humble, and intentional.
