A new study published in Conservation Biology has revealed that the majority of marine fish sold in the United States aquarium market still come directly from the wild, raising alarms over the long-term survival of coral reef ecosystems already under pressure from climate change and overfishing.
Researchers analyzed data from four major U.S.-based online aquarium retailers and found that around 90 percent of marine fish species available for sale were sourced exclusively from wild populations, while only a small fraction were produced through aquaculture. The findings highlight a critical sustainability gap in one of the world’s most popular hobbies.
“The scale of wild collection is much larger than many people realize,” the study’s authors, Bing Lin from Princeton University said. “Even though aquaculture technology exists for some species, the trade continues to rely heavily on extraction from nature.”
U.S. Market Dominates
The United States remains the world’s largest importer of marine aquarium fish, accounting for an estimated two-thirds of global demand. The online aquarium industry alone offers more than 700 species for sale, yet nearly all of them are taken from coral reefs across Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and parts of the Caribbean.
According to the study, 655 of 734 identified species were sold exclusively as wild-caught, while just 21 species were entirely aquacultured. The rest came from mixed sources that could not be traced with certainty.
Another striking detail from the research shows that aquacultured fish were often cheaper than their wild-caught counterparts — in some cases by as much as 28 percent — yet consumers and retailers continued to favor wild-sourced species. The researchers believe this preference may stem from poor labeling, lack of awareness, and long-standing assumptions that wild fish are healthier or more colorful.
The heavy dependence on wild collection is putting enormous strain on coral reefs, which are already among the planet’s most fragile ecosystems. The report identified 45 fish species offered for sale that are considered at risk, including several that appear on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
Of these, 38 species were available only as wild-caught, meaning there are no sustainable alternatives in the trade. Researchers warn that this practice could push certain species closer to extinction, particularly those with slow reproductive rates or limited habitat ranges.
Beyond species loss, destructive fishing methods — such as the use of cyanide to stun fish before capture — continue to damage reef habitats. Cyanide poisoning kills corals and other marine life, leaving long-lasting scars on ecosystems that take decades to recover.

Hidden Mortality
The study also points to significant hidden losses throughout the supply chain. Many fish die before reaching export or retail stages due to stress, handling, or poor water quality. In some regions, such as Papua New Guinea, up to one-quarter of fish collected for the aquarium trade are discarded or rejected before shipping.
“These unrecorded mortalities mean the true ecological cost is far higher than trade statistics suggest,” said Bing Lin again. “For every fish that appears in a store, several more may have already died during capture and transport.”
While the environmental risks are clear, the aquarium trade also supports thousands of livelihoods in developing coastal regions. Collecting and exporting ornamental fish provides vital income for communities in Indonesia, the Philippines, and other island nations.
Experts say that rather than banning wild collection entirely, the focus should shift toward sustainable management, improved traceability, and better incentives for communities that practice responsible fishing.
“Sustainable fisheries can play a positive role when managed correctly,” said the researchers. “But without proper oversight, the trade risks destroying the very reefs that support it.”
Calls for Reform and Regulation
Conservationists and scientists are now urging stronger regulations to govern the trade in marine aquarium fish. Proposals include stricter export permits, expanded species monitoring, and increased investment in aquaculture programs that can provide alternatives to wild collection.
The study also calls for greater transparency in labeling and certification systems, enabling consumers to identify whether their aquarium fish were captive-bred or taken from the wild. Consumer awareness, experts say, could become a driving force for change.

“The choice ultimately lies with consumers,” the researchers concluded. “If we want to keep coral reefs alive, we must stop taking their fish faster than nature can replace them.” (Wage Erlangga)
