For years, Nevada has been regarded as one of the strongholds of the Golden Eagle in the western United States. Vast open deserts, rocky mountains, and sweeping plateaus once provided the perfect habitat for the species. But a new scientific assessment has revealed a very different reality: Golden Eagles in Nevada are declining far more rapidly than previously believed. A decade-long study has now uncovered the scale of the problem, showing that what looked like a stable population was in fact an illusion created by incoming birds from outside the state.
The research, titled “Estimating Survival and Population Trajectories of Golden Eagles in Nevada,” was published in November 18, 2025 in the Journal of Raptor Research (Volume 59, Issue 4). Conducted by James E. Golden, Joseph G. Barnes, and Perry J. Williams, the study provides one of the most detailed examinations of survival rates, mortality, and long-term population dynamics for Golden Eagles in Nevada. Using data collected from 43 tagged eagles between 2014 and 2024, the researchers pieced together a troubling pattern: the population is shrinking, and at a pace that could threaten the species’ future in the region.
The research team tracked 43 Golden Eagles between 2014 and 2024, representing both adults and subadults. Their goal was to examine not only survival rates but also to understand how deaths, recruitment of young birds, and immigration from neighboring regions influence Nevada’s overall population. What they found was alarming: at least 30 of the tagged eagles died, many from human-related hazards. This mortality rate was far higher than the level needed to maintain a stable population. Despite these losses, nest occupancy in Nevada’s deserts remained superficially constant, creating a misleading picture of stability.

The apparent contradiction — high mortality but stable nest occupancy — was explained by one critical mechanism: the constant arrival of eagles from outside Nevada. These incoming birds, often non-breeding individuals known as “floaters,” are replacing local birds that die. According to the researchers, this is a classic sign of a population sink, an ecological scenario in which deaths in a particular region outpace births, but the losses remain hidden because new individuals continually flow in from elsewhere.
In an interview about the findings, researcher Joseph G. Barnes, who has studied Golden Eagles in Nevada for around 15 years, emphasized the challenges of monitoring the species.
“Golden Eagles are difficult to detect,” he said, noting that these birds inhabit rugged, remote desert landscapes where traditional population surveys frequently underestimate declines.
Barnes warned that counting nests alone is no longer reliable, because nest occupancy can mask significant mortality occurring throughout the wider population.
The study also reveals the main forces driving the decline. Nevada’s desert ecosystems — part of both the Great Basin and Mojave Desert — have undergone dramatic transformation in the last decade. Expanding renewable-energy projects, particularly solar fields and geothermal plants, have fragmented habitats and increased the risk of collisions with infrastructure. Electrocution from power lines, vehicle strikes, and collisions with industrial structures were among the leading direct causes of death observed in the tagged birds.

Virus Make It More Hard
Compounding these threats is a major decline in prey availability. Since 2020, populations of jackrabbits and cottontails — primary prey for Golden Eagles — have collapsed due to the outbreak of Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus 2 (RHDV2). Many of the subadult eagles tracked in the study showed signs of severe malnutrition. Barnes explained that without sufficient prey, young eagles struggle to survive their first years of life, even in intact habitat. This reduces recruitment rates, further accelerating population decline.
The research team used demographic modeling to project future population trajectories. Their models showed a consistently negative growth rate, suggesting the population is shrinking steadily. Although the study does not predict a specific year of extinction, the authors warn that if current conditions persist, Nevada’s Golden Eagles could face long-term collapse and continue pulling individuals from healthy populations in neighboring states. This would expand the population sink effect outward, threatening the broader western U.S. Golden Eagle population.
Despite the dire results, the researchers stressed that solutions exist — but urgent action is needed. Barnes highlighted the importance of coordinated planning between land managers, conservationists, and the renewable-energy sector. He noted that strategic placement of energy infrastructure, retrofitting dangerous power lines, managing habitat to support prey species, and long-term ecological monitoring could significantly reduce mortality.
“If we can work together to reduce human-caused deaths and preserve key foraging areas,” he said, “we may be able to stabilize the population before losses become irreversible.”
The study’s findings send a clear message, Nevada’s Golden Eagles are not as secure as previously believed. The apparent stability of nests hides a far deeper crisis, one driven by high mortality, shrinking food supplies, and a landscape undergoing rapid transformation.
