Climate change is reshaping the reproductive patterns of sea turtles, according to a new long-term study that found loggerhead turtles are nesting earlier but producing fewer eggs over time.
Researchers from Queen Mary University of London reported that the Loggerhead sea turtle has shifted its nesting season forward in response to rising ocean temperatures. However, the apparent adjustment masks a troubling trend: declining clutch frequency and clutch size.
The findings, published on February 11, 2026 based on 17 years of monitoring in Cabo Verde — one of the world’s most important nesting sites for loggerheads — suggest that warmer oceans may be disrupting the energy balance turtles need for successful reproduction.
“Sea turtles are adjusting their biological timing to warmer conditions,” said Prof. Christophe Eizaguirre, an evolutionary and conservation geneticist at Queen Mary University of London who led the research. “But earlier nesting does not mean better reproduction. In fact, we are seeing fewer eggs and longer intervals between nesting seasons.”
Earlier Nesting, Fewer Eggs
The study found a negative trend in clutch frequency between 2008 and 2024. Individual females are returning to nest less frequently than in the past. Instead of nesting every two to three years, some now take up to four years before returning to the beach.
Clutch size — the number of eggs laid per nesting event — has also declined over the same period.
From the beach, nesting activity may still appear strong. But long-term tracking of individual turtles revealed a more complex picture: reproductive output per female is decreasing.
Loggerhead turtles are considered “capital breeders,” meaning they rely on stored energy accumulated at their foraging grounds to fuel reproduction. If food availability declines, so does their capacity to produce eggs.
The Role of Ocean Productivity
The study identified chlorophyll-a levels at the turtles’ foraging grounds — a proxy for ocean productivity — as the strongest predictor of clutch frequency. Lower chlorophyll levels suggest reduced primary productivity, meaning less food is available in the marine food web.
“Protecting nesting beaches is essential, but it’s not enough,” Eizaguirre said. “What happens thousands of kilometers away in the foraging grounds can determine whether a turtle has enough energy to reproduce.”
The researchers also examined interactions between chlorophyll-a levels, sea surface temperature and turtle body size. The results indicate a trade-off between environmental conditions and reproductive investment, highlighting the complex ways climate change influences marine species.
Declining ocean productivity can be linked to warming waters, altered currents and stratification of the water column — all of which can reduce nutrient mixing and biological output. Human pressures such as overfishing and pollution may further compound the problem.

A Similar Pattern in Indonesia
Signs of reproductive pressure are also emerging in Southeast Asia.
Along the southern coast of Java, Indonesia, the Green sea turtle is reportedly nesting less frequently than in previous years. According to January 19, 2026 report published by Lingkar Bumi, nesting activity has declined in several key areas, including parts of Tasikmalaya and Sukabumi.
Environmental stressors such as coastal erosion, artificial lighting, and increasing human activity near nesting beaches are contributing to habitat degradation. Shoreline changes have reduced the availability of suitable nesting areas and diminished natural vegetation that helps protect nests.
Long-term monitoring data show significant annual fluctuations in the number of nesting females and eggs laid. Conservationists warn that without stronger coastal management and marine protection, these populations could face long-term instability.
Beyond the Beach
The combined findings from the Atlantic and Indonesia underscore a broader message: sea turtle conservation cannot focus solely on beaches.
While nesting grounds remain critical, marine feeding habitats must also be safeguarded. Climate change, declining ocean productivity and human pressures at sea are increasingly shaping reproductive outcomes.
Sea turtles have survived for more than 100 million years, adapting to dramatic planetary changes. But today’s rapid environmental shifts present unprecedented challenges.
If warming trends continue and ocean ecosystems deteriorate, earlier nesting may not compensate for reduced egg production. Scientists warn that long-term population stability depends on coordinated global action — from reducing greenhouse gas emissions to strengthening marine conservation measures.
