Carstensz Pyramid is not only the highest peak in Indonesia, but also a symbol of humanity’s long and often uncertain journey in understanding Papua. The history of this mountain began with a maritime observation once dismissed as impossible, before gradually being confirmed through scientific expeditions and eventually recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious climbing objectives within the Seven Summits.
The earliest known account dates back to 1623, when Dutch navigator Jan Carstensz reported seeing snow-covered mountains deep in Papua while sailing along the island’s southern coast. His observations were recorded in Dutch East India Company archives and later referenced in European geographical literature. At the time, the claim challenged prevailing beliefs that permanent snow could not exist near the equator, leading many scholars to dismiss it as a navigational error or illusion.
Skepticism surrounding Carstensz’s report persisted for nearly three centuries. In later analyses published in The Geographical Journal, the account was described as “too extraordinary to be accepted without direct verification,” reflecting the limited understanding of global climate systems in the 17th and 18th centuries.
H.A.Lorentz Expedition
Scientific confirmation finally arrived in the early 20th century. In 1909, an expedition led by Dutch explorer H.A. Lorentz successfully penetrated Papua’s Central Highlands. In official reports published by the Royal Dutch Geographical Society, Lorentz confirmed the presence of permanent snow and ice on the high peaks of the Sudirman Range, effectively validating Jan Carstensz’s centuries-old claim.
Lorentz described the region as presenting an “extraordinary combination of tropical rainforest and alpine landscape,” a phrase that has since become a foundational reference in geographical studies of Papua. His findings marked a turning point, transforming Carstensz from a disputed observation into a scientifically recognized mountain system.

Wollaston Expedition
Building on Lorentz’s work, British exploration followed shortly thereafter. Between 1912 and 1913, Alexander Francis Richmond Wollaston led the British Ornithologists’ Union Expedition to Dutch New Guinea, supported by the Royal Geographical Society. Although Wollaston did not reach the summit of Carstensz Pyramid, his expedition played a crucial role in expanding scientific knowledge of the region.
Wollaston’s team conducted extensive observations of the Central Highlands, documenting topography, climate, flora, fauna, and indigenous highland communities. His findings were later published in Pygmies and Papuans: The Stone Age Today in Dutch New Guinea and in scientific journals in Britain. In The Geographical Journal, Wollaston’s expedition was recognized as one of the most significant British contributions to the understanding of Papua’s interior, providing detailed descriptions that would inform later Dutch and international expeditions.
Importantly, Wollaston helped bridge the gap between early reconnaissance and large-scale exploration. His work reinforced earlier confirmations of snow in equatorial Papua and provided practical knowledge about terrain, access routes, and local conditions—elements that proved essential for subsequent high-altitude expeditions.
Colijn–Dozy–Wissels and Harrer Expedition
A major milestone followed in 1936 with the Colijn–Dozy–Wissels Expedition. While the team did not climb what is now known as Carstensz Pyramid, they successfully reached Ngga Pulu, which at the time was higher due to its thick ice cap. Geological reports by expedition member Jean Jacques Dozy documented extensive mineral deposits in the area, discoveries that would later have profound economic and political implications for Papua.
The first successful ascent of Carstensz Pyramid itself was achieved in 1962 by a team led by Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer. Unlike earlier exploratory journeys, this ascent relied on modern technical climbing techniques to overcome the steep limestone walls of the peak. Harrer later described Carstensz as “a small mountain with little tolerance for technical error,” underscoring the seriousness of the climb despite its modest elevation compared to Himalayan giants.
Indonesia Expedition
Indonesia’s mountaineering history soon followed. In 1963, the Cendrawasih Expedition marked the first successful ascent by Indonesian climbers, a symbolic moment in the nation’s engagement with its highest peak. This was followed in 1971 by a civilian Indonesian ascent carried out by Mapala Universitas Indonesia, an event recorded in university archives and mountaineering organization records.
As global mountaineering evolved, Carstensz Pyramid gained recognition as one of the most distinctive challenges among the Seven Summits. Unlike peaks dominated by long trekking routes, Carstensz requires technical rock climbing in a tropical environment marked by heavy rainfall and rapidly changing weather. Its geological position on the Australian tectonic plate has led many climbers to regard it as the true continental high point of Australia, replacing Mount Kosciuszko in the Seven Summits debate.
Today, Carstensz Pyramid is no longer viewed as a curious footnote from a 17th-century sailor’s log. It stands as a product of centuries of exploration—Dutch, British, and international—shaped by skepticism, scientific inquiry, and human perseverance. From Jan Carstensz’s disputed sighting, through Lorentz’s confirmation and Wollaston’s scientific groundwork, to modern technical ascents, the history of Carstensz Pyramid reflects the gradual transformation of myth into measured understanding, and finally into one of the world’s most demanding mountaineering objectives.
