The island province of Biliran in Eastern Visayas is gearing up to host one of Asia’s most grueling endurance events, the La Routa Adventure Race 2025, from November 17 to 21. The race serves as the Asia Championship leg of the Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS), drawing elite teams from around the world to the Philippines.
Covering approximately 350 kilometers, La Routa is a non-stop, expedition-style race that pushes competitors to their limits across Biliran’s volcanic peaks, dense rainforests, rivers, and coastal waters. Teams of four — including at least one female — must rely solely on traditional navigation tools like maps and compasses as they trek, mountain-bike, paddle, swim, and climb through tropical terrain.
“The safety feature of Biliran is very high because it is an island. Even if the team gets lost, they would only be within the boundaries of Biliran,” said Jason Garrido, race director of La Routa, in an interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

Tourism and Environmental Impact
The event is expected to boost Eastern Visayas’ reputation as a global adventure destination.
“Sports tourism is one of our priority products. Eastern Visayas has a space in this offering, particularly in adventure racing,” said Karina Rosa Tiopes, Regional Director of the Department of Tourism Region 8 (DOT-8), as reported by SunStar Tacloban.
Past editions of La Routa have attracted teams from New Zealand, Poland, Japan, India, Malaysia, and the Philippines, according to the Philippine Information Agency (PIA). The race is recognized as one of the most technical in the ARWS circuit due to its unpredictable weather, steep climbs, and complex navigation.

Race Format and Challenge
The competition runs continuously for four to five days, often without rest. Teams must plan their own routes using topographic maps — some in nonstandard scales — while balancing endurance, teamwork, and navigation accuracy.
“Nature always has so many variables — weather, climate, time. But as adventure racers, we always try to overcome,” Garrido told PNA during the pre-event press conference.
Organizers emphasize that La Routa promotes not only endurance and exploration but also environmental awareness. The course highlights Biliran’s lush forests, volcanic springs, waterfalls, and marine ecosystems — showcasing how adventure racing and sustainability can coexist.
As the official Asian qualifier for the ARWS World Championship 2026, La Routa gives winners a direct entry to the global stage of expedition racing. The event also provides economic opportunities for local communities through tourism, hospitality, and logistical support.
“It gained us promotional mileage in showcasing our wonders of nature, our culture, our heritage, and the warmth of our people to foreign participants,” Tiopes said. (Sulung Prasetyo)
